| dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines the historical evolution of Valluvanad through ananalysis of its physiography, socio economic transformation, land relations,occupational structures and ritual practices. The introductory chapters trace howValluvanad emerged as a distinct nadu (region) and how its physical environment thecourse of its development.Subsequent chapters explore the migration of various communities in toValluvanad, the formation of occupational groups, and the interplay between caste andreligion in shaping its material culture. The study also investigates the changes in landtenure, taxation, trade and infrastructure during the periods of the local rulers, Tipusultan and the British East India company, highlighting their impact on agrarian lifeand the peasant unrest.The cultural dimension of Valluvanad is discussed through its rituals, beliefs,sacred groves and festivals which together express the region’s unique identity. Thecolonial period marked significant socio- cultural shifts and Valluvanad became avibrant center for reform and renaissance movements.Although Valluvanad lost its political identity over time, its linguistic andartistic and indigenous traditions continue to embody a living cultural legacy. Thethesis concludes by emphasizing the need preserve and promote the distinct culturaltradition of Valluvanad. | |
