Abstract

Muslims are a crucially influential community in the cultural map of Kerala. The aim of this study is to ideologically analyze the politics of Muslim representation in Malayalam novels based on the reality of how Kerala public consciousness recorded the historical con- texts that influenced Muslim life and politics. The history of the Malayalam novel begins at the end of the nineteenth century. The novel, which is a product of colonial modernity, needs to be examined for its ideological interactions with its early history. This study is an attempt to investigate the representation of Muslims in Malayalam novels in the light of historical contexts such as Portuguese invasion, Anti-colonial struggles, Tipu’s arrival, Malabar Rebellion, national movement, partition of India, Babri Masjid collapse, 9/11 ter- rorist attacks. This thesis, which investigates the representation of Muslims in Malayalam novels, consists of four chapters, apart from an introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter, The Ideological Geography of Representation, introduces theoretical approaches to ideo- logy and representation and the methodology of post classical narratology. The second chapter, Colonial Modernity and Muslim Representation, analyzes the representation of Muslims in early Malayalam novels in the context of colonial modernity and the historical context of the time. The novels Saraswatheevijayam, Lakshmikesavam and Sukumari are studied in detail in this chapter. In the third chapter Muslim Life and National Muslim in the post-independence Malayalam novel, the public consciousness created by the dis- courses of nationalism is analyzed in the inter-divisional political background. Moodupadam, Bhranthalayam and Sultanveedu are used for detailed study in this chapter. The final chapter, Post-9/11 Global Muslim Crisis and the Malayalam Novel, studies the global Muslim crisis caused by terrorist attacks and the war on terror on the basis of a con- temporary Malayalam novel. The novels Ya Ilahi Times, Ponon Gombe and The Koya are studied in detail in this chapter. Based on these nine novels from different eras, this study exposes the ideological background of Muslim representation in Malayalam novels.
