Abstract
Mathematics is an abstract science which deals with the quantitative aspects of the entire
life as well as entire world. To learn and perform in Mathematics requires a perfect
understanding of the underlying principles. The evolution of mathematics teaching
tools shows a steady shift from simple, hands-on aids to advanced digital technologies
that enhance understanding and engagement. Government of Kerala introduced the IT
Maths Lab in order to give the mathematics education in constructive paradigm and
enhance the critical and logical thinking among students. The study aimed to assess the
effectiveness of IT Maths Lab for the enhancement of abstract thinking through the
transaction of the content in mathematics among higher secondary schools and to study
the Attitude of higher secondary school teachers towards the IT Maths Lab for teaching
learning process.
Survey methods was employed for the present investigation. The sample consists
of 1631 students from higher secondary schools in Kerala, 779 mathematics teacher
from higher secondary schools in Kerala and 35 principals. The tools and used to collect
the data relevant for the study are Interview Schedule (principals), Perceived
Effectiveness Scale (students), and Attitude Scale (teachers). Statistical techniques used
in this study were one-sample t-test, independent sample t-test and Analysis of variance.
Perceived effectiveness of the higher secondary school student through IT Maths
Lab activities is significantly high. There is no significant difference in the perceived
effectiveness of the higher secondary school students through IT Maths Lab activities
based on gender of the students, management of school and locality of the school. But
there exist difference in the perceived effectiveness based on grade in mathematics of
SSLC examination.
Attitude of Mathematics teachers towards IT Maths Lab activities for learning
mathematics of the higher secondary school student is significantly high. There is no
significant difference in the attitude of teachers towards IT Maths Lab based on gender,
management of school, locality of school and teaching experience of teachers. But, there
exist significant difference in the attitude of teachers towards IT Maths Lab based on
various age groups (p=0.016). Study recommended that maximum IT enabled learning
activities should be included in the secondary school mathematics text book in the
curriculum revision.
